Pilgrimages have probably been held in Žďár since the foundation of the monastery. Originally, the tradition was associated with the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady in mid-August. However, after the construction of the pilgrimage church, the tradition was surpassed by the new baroque pilgrimage events in honor of St John of Nepomuk. After the consecration of the church on September 27, 1722, Žďár nad Sázavou became one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the Czech lands. In addition to the pilgrimage itself, which falls on May 16 every year, festivities were also held in the church on the first Sunday in June, July, August, and also on the Sunday after Saint Matthew (between September 22 and 30, the date roughly corresponding to the consecration of the church).

Nowadays, the main pilgrimage day is set for the Sunday closest to May 16. Festivities and ceremonies take place in the form of masses, religious events, the evening of praises, etc.
